The National Press Club is concerned about the current situation at the SABC. The recent suspensions and resignations at the public broadcaster give reason to worry.
We would like to add our voice to the other organisations that have voiced their concerns about the matter. “The public broadcaster has a very important role to fulfil, especially before the upcoming election,” said Tanya de Vente-Bijker, chairperson of the press club.
“We urge the SABC not to allow political meddling and mismanagement to hinder the production of quality journalism.”
She said journalists should be able to report the news without gatekeeping by management. “Freedom of speech is something that is guaranteed in our constitution and this hard fought for freedom must be protected and upheld,” she said.
